Ty Cobb Museum

ty cobb museum

The Ty Cobb Museum pays homage to one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Ty Cobb, born Tyrus Raymond Cobb, was born the oldest of three children to a stern father. Upon Cobb's leaving to start his baseball career, his father told him, "Don't come home a failure." A failure is one adjective that no one can use to describe Ty Cobb and his magnificent career.

The Museum, located in Cobb's hometown of Royston, provides a glimpse into the life of Ty Cobb. With rare items, such as Cobb's 1907 American League batting champion medal, as well as photographs and other memorabilia, one is sure to enjoy all of the history and information this Museum offers about baseball and, more importantly, about Cobb. The museum also houses the Franklin County Sports Hall of Fame; with inductees including Cobb, 1943 American League MVP Spud Chandler, Pro Bowl lineman Tony Jones and All-American quarterback Dee Dowis.

Inside the Museum, the Cobb Theater features stadium-style seating with a video that includes narration by Georgia broadcasting legend Larry Munson and interviews with Atlanta Braves' star Chipper Jones and ESPN baseball analyst Peter Gammons, along with rare footage and still photographs. Since its inception in 1998, the Museum has held on to its mission to foster education and understanding to the broadest possible audience of the greatest baseball hitter of all time. They accomplish this mission through art and memorabilia, film, video, books and historical archives.

To get to the Museum from downtown Toccoa, take Currahee St./Hwy. 123 east to Big A Road/Hwy. 17. Turn right onto Big A Road/Hwy. 17. Stay on Hwy. 17 for approximately 28 miles. Turn right onto Cook St. The Museum is located at 461 Cook St. in Royston.
